Week Two: What Will You Do?

IT IS WEEK THREE OF NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH When you go to ready.gov and look at the activities outlined for week 3, you learn that the site recommends checking on your coverage. As you know, insurance is a first line of defense and form of mitigation that will lessen the overall impact of disasters. With Hurricane Florence quickly approaching the East Coast and in particular the Carolinas, I hope they have the appropriate coverage for their homes. My husband's parents and most of his siblings' families live in or near the Raleigh area. Earlier this week, I saw a post on Facebook from my sister-in-law asking if anyone knew where they could find bottled water. She along with her fellow residents were heeding the warnings of the media outlets to prepare for the hurricane. Since they are all located in land, they are preparing for heavy rain, wind, potential flooding and power outages. Generators and other supplies are in high demand and limited supply and the storm has yet to hit. Imagine how are region would react if we had a major earthquake? Immediately after the shaking stopped we would check on our loved ones, property and belongings. If we had taken the steps necessary to prepare beforehand, we would have the tools and supplies to ride out the interruption. If you didn't prepare, you will find yourself competing with your fellow neighbors for the limited supply available. Likely, we would not have access to securing the necessary items as a result of two outcomes: (1) There is not enough product to meet the needs and restocking will be interrupted as a result of infrastructure damage and (2) If the supplies are available you have no means to purchase the supplies, due to cash machines not working. Don't wait for the earthquake to happen! Do something NOW! Take this weekend to get prepared. Buy some water, food and other necessary items and put some cash in your kits. There are sites with lists and lists of items to have on hand. Check out the Ready.gov Supply List and take a look at the Red Cross Disaster Calendar. They are both excellent resources get you started or to revisit your existing plans. DON'T FORGET TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR PROMOTIONAL OFFER!!!! In light of National Preparedness Month, we are offering a special promotion for an educational seminar, response plan development, tabletop exercise or drill to organizations that would like HT2 to develop, deliver and/or lead a session. For those of you that are residential recipients of these tips, you are welcome to schedule a home safety consultation.
