INFORMATION IS PARAMOUNT!
In the event that we have a major earthquake in our region, being informed will be paramount, as our infrastructure will likely be impacted. How will you know if there are road hazards? Or gas leaks? Since we will likely lose power, some of our standard information channels will be limited. How will you receive the necessary information to ensure you and your loved ones remain safe?
The most efficient means of communication in these situations will be demonstrated by amateur ham operators. However, most people do not possess this skill set. So what should the general community member do? Get a radio!
HT2 recommends that you invest in an AM/FM hand cranked radio equipped with NOAA Weather channels. These types of radios are great, as they can often serve multiple purposes, depending upon the amenities they include. Many of the radios will have a flashlight function, a back up battery power option coupled with a hand cranked option, as well as a USB port to generate power to some electronics.
Opting for a radio that includes the NOAA weather channels can prove to be invaluable, as you can enable them to warn you of inclement weather. Highly recommended if you plan to spend time in the mountains, coastline or in Eastern Washington during the summer months.
In addition to the AM/FM radio. You may want to consider investing in two-way radios to communicate with neighbors and friends nearby. Lastly, become familiar with social media outlets, as they can be very valuable in learning situational information.
