If you have been following the news and weather forecasts, you are assuredly aware that we are due for some windy weather over the weekend. I for one like a good wind storm to remind folks to get prepared. The beauty of a windstorm is that we get warning and can take action to be prepared for the event.
Here are some tips and resources for getting prepared for this weekend's event.
STAY INFORMED: Continue to monitor the weather forecasts and believe them. Meteorologists are very accurate with their predictions for windstorms. So, take their warnings seriously.
MITIGATE THE IMPACT: Check on your current insurance plans and see if it will cover damage from windstorms. Fill up your gas tank, in the event that we have a power outage with limited resources. Secure furniture, hanging plants and other items outside. Close your blinds and curtains, in the event a window is shattered.
RESPOND TO THE WIND EVENT: Most importantly, remain CALM! Stay indoors and if possible go to lower levels of your home. Avoid positioning yourself near windows.
RECOVERY: Check for any family members with injuries and administer first aid as necessary. If necessary, call 911. Then inspect your property damage and report it to your insurance agent.
POWER OUTAGE TIPS: Turn off all appliances and leave one light on, which will alert you to power restoration. Keep your refrigerator closed
Stock up on supplies.
Get plenty of water and food to last you at least a couple of weeks. Get extra batteries, flashlights, light sticks, LED lanterns, etc.
What will keep you warm if the power goes out? Do you have alternate heating options? If so, can you isolate an area to heat, by hanging blankets, plastic sheeting, curtains, etc. to contain the heat?
PLEASE REMEMBER......CARBON MONOXIDE IS A KILLER. NEVER USE YOUR OVEN OR A BARBECUE TO HEAT YOUR HOME!
ALSO AVOID THE USE OF CANDLES OR OTHER OPEN FLAME SOURCES DURING AN OUTAGE. NO NEED TO HAVE AN ACCIDENTAL HOME FIRE DURING AN OUTAGE!
Good luck to everyone in the coming days. Stay warm, stay dry and stay safe!
